Web standards

Web Standards refer to standards for creating web sites that are internationally agreed on as the best practices. The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), is the international governing body that oversees the development of web standards.

Web standards involves separating content from design, meaning when we build a website we have one document which holds all the information (content) and another document which holds all of the style and design information. There are many advantages to building a website this way including:

Accessibility – It is easier to conform to disability legislation using a website built with web standards. See our Accessibility services.

Improved print facilities – There is nothing more annoying than printing a web page and only getting half the content. With web standards you can produce a separate style designed especially for printers.

Backwards compatible – Web standards allows us to style pages for older browsers without affecting newer ones.

Different Devices – By using a separate style document depending on the device accessing your site we can ensure that your web site looks great on any screen, be it a PDA, mobile phone or computer screen.

Simple Redesign – Web standards means that you can quickly and easily redesign the look and feel of your website without affecting the content. We also only need to change one document rather than each page.

Better Performance – Without the need to repeat style information on every page, our code becomes much cleaner which means your site will download quicker.

Search Engine Optimisation – Search engines don't care what colour the text is on your site or how it looks. Using a separate style document means they can ignore the styling information and simply read the document that contains the content. This makes it easier for search engines to index your site improves your chances of getting a higher ranking.
