Windows Vulnerabilities

Often the importance of Windows operating system patches and updates are underestimated. The value of keeping your servers and workstations up to date isnt always clear, and many may even suspect that it is hyped by those that benefit from providing the service. The reality is that as the Internet plays a more important part in our lives and our businesses the need to keep our sofware up to date increases. If you need convincing take a look at this. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7118452.stm...

The MOST important change you can make to your website TODAY

The biggest factor contributing to the search engine performance of your website is the page title (the words that appear in the blue bar at the top of your browser window). It is the first thing that search engines show site visitors about your site, and it is the text of the link that site visitors click on when they visit your site from search engines. Most search engines place much more weight on the page title tag text than any other on page element. Changing the titles of each page on your website will significantly improve the performance in...

Cost effective Website promotion

Promoting your business on the web doesn't have to be expensive or complicated. We have been amazed by the success we have seen lately on a local website called The Best of Reading. http://www.thebestof.co.uk is a website that champions trusted local businesses right across the UK. For the fraction of the cost of yell.com or Goodle adwords, the site gives businesses their own page, which typically contains contact details and a profile (the profile can contain photos, and audio) and a link to their website. Each business also gets...

With the experience we have gained from taking over from lone IT managers and from working together with IT managers here are the questions that I think need to be carefully considered: Can you effectively...

A perfect example of how to make life difficult for your users

Whilst browsing through my local council website, I came across a link at the bottom of the site to an organisation called browsealoud. Browsealoud reads web pages aloud for people who find it difficult to read online. Reading large amounts of text on screen can be difficult for those with literacy and visual impairments. Imagine the horror of a user with literacy or visual impairments coming to the homepage of the Browsealoud website for the first time and being presented with this: If you have low literacy and reading skills, do you think you will understand a word they are...

Website success story

One of our Clients, English Village Designs, dropped me an email today to let me know that the orders on her site are coming in so I thought I would share the good news. Anne makes cardboard cut out models of historical buildings and Dolls and around 9 months ago we built her a site to sell these online. The graph below shows you an indication of the traffic that she is getting to her site. As you can see in March there was very little traffic but now they are receiving around 200 unique visits to the site each...
