The MOST important change you can make to your website TODAY

The biggest factor contributing to the search engine performance of your website is the page title (the words that appear in the blue bar at the top of your browser window). It is the first thing that search engines show site visitors about your site, and it is the text of the link that site visitors click on when they visit your site from search engines. Most search engines place much more weight on the page title tag text than any other on page element.

Changing the titles of each page on your website will significantly improve the performance in search engines - guaranteed!

However, there is an art to getting them right, so here are our main points to think about:

  1. Keep the page titles to under 70 characters - Google only displays the first 70. Don't worry if you go over but be aware that they may not be shown.
  2. Use your most important keywords at the start of the title. For example, if you sell tennis rackets, then use the words "Tennis Rackets" at the start of the page title.
  3. Unless you want to specifically promote the name of your company, don't use your company name in the title. If you really want to have it in there then place the company name at the end.
  4. Use a different title for each page and remember to describe what the page contains. Remember that search engines use these words to index your site so simply using the words "contact us" in your page title is no good. How many people do you think will search for those keywords and how will they know it is your page they have found?
  5. If you think that your keywords are too generic and you face a lot of competition, try putting in an area into your page titles

This is a very simple task to do and can have a dramatic effect on your sites effectiveness in the search engines.
