This is a question we find we have to answer a lot but the answer is not always that straight forward.
The general rule of thumb is that it can take up to six months for brand new websites or sites that have little or no online optimisation.
Consider the following points to help you understand how long it is likely to take to rank well within Google (As always I'm using Google as an example but in general these rules apply to all search engines).
How competitive are the results?
If the search term you are competing for is particularly uncompetitive (well done, you've found a good market) you might be able to rank within a month even if your site is brand new.
Is your site brand new?
If your site is brand new then it is very unlikely that you can expect to see your site in Google's listings within six month and you can expect it to take even longer to start to rank well. Google applies a large weighting to the age of the site and there's nothing you can do to speed this up but continue to work on your ongoing SEO. Getting back links is the best strategy for a new site, however try to spread the new links over a few months of Google will become suspicious and all your hard work will be harming you.
Is your site more than two years old?
If your site is already established then you can afford to be a bit more aggressive with your linking strategy. Again, depending on the strength of the competition for your search terms it can either take very little work to rank well. On the flip side, if your competition are working hard on their strategy, you too will have to work hard (even out work them) in order to perform as well.
How hard are your competitors working?
You will have to work as hard as, if not harder, than your competitors in order to get your site up there with them. If you are unsure track their current link count and their link growth. Also look for signs of public relation and the quality level of their inbound links.
As always it comes back to carrying out a good optimisation strategy and you will rank as fast as is physically possible but there's no fast track. Keep launching quality original content, keep working at brand building, keep making social connections, and watch the traction build. Ranking well within Google depends on many different factors which could mean it takes anywhere up to 1 year before you can expect to see some worthwhile results.
