Outlook comes to Apple's iPhone

Apple announced yesterday that the highly acclaimed iPhone will shortly include Activesync software enabling it to synchronize with Microsoft Exchange. Most people will be aware of the iPhone, but for the benefit of anyone that has somehow managed to miss it, the iPhone is arguably the best 'fun' phone on the market combining the features of an IPOD and mobile Phone into a incredibly slick little device with a touch screen interface that blows away any of the competition. One of the iPhones most remarkable features is its Web Browser which makes the experience of browsing the Web more akin...

Increase your productivity with two screens

If I said you may be able to improve your productivity whilst working at your computer by up to 20-30% simply by purchasing a new piece of hardware for only a hundred pounds, you'd probably either think I was talking rubbish, or you'd expect me to start ranting about an innovating new product. Well its true and its actually very simple. Surveys have consistently shown that adding an extra monitor will give your productivity a considerable boost, 20-30% according to a survey by Jon Peddie Research. http://www.jonpeddie.com/special/MultDisp.shtml Running dual screens has been the norm for programmers and web designers for...

Apple release "world's thinnest laptop"

Last week Apple announced the release of what they are calling the World's thinnest laptop. Measuring just 4mm at it's thinnest point, the laptop is not only ultra portable but also boasts excellent battery life without compromising power. Details of the laptop can be found at http://www.apple.com/uk/macbookair/ This computer is the start of a revolution for the laptop market because it sees the first solid state hard drive to come into public awareness (Although technically Samsung and Lenovo have been shipping them out in their computers for a while). Windows Vulnerabilities

Often the importance of Windows operating system patches and updates are underestimated. The value of keeping your servers and workstations up to date isnt always clear, and many may even suspect that it is hyped by those that benefit from providing the service. The reality is that as the Internet plays a more important part in our lives and our businesses the need to keep our sofware up to date increases. If you need convincing take a look at this. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7118452.stm...

Hire or Outsource?

Surely the question on the tip of many SME companies tongues when they are considering their IT support is, do we outsource or do we hire our own full time resource? Will we get better value from hiring one full time individual that can spend every minute of every day in our office rather than outsourcing for less or a similar budget to a company? With the experience we have gained from taking over from lone IT managers and from working together with IT managers here are the questions that I think need to be carefully considered: Can you effectively...

How your business can benefit from Instant Messaging

Instant messaging is becoming increasingly critical as a business tool and by 2013 it is estimated almost all workers (95 per cent) will be using it as their primary technology tool for real-time communication. Over half of UK businesses lack policies on IM usage in the workplace, according to a new report. The benefits of Instant Messaging Instant Messaging has many benefits for your business and it must not be thought of as simply a way for your employees to chat with their friends. Allows for "instant" communications between people. This can save time and money as you can resolve...

How big is your businesses carbon footprint?

Most of us are now doing our little bit at home for the environment. An increasing number of us recycle and make sure that our appliances are switched off, rather than left on standby, before we go to bed. The more committed eco warriors are even installing solar power, wind turbines and zero carbon footprint heating systems. The more aware I have become of my carbon footprint, the more I have started to wonder about the carbon footprint here at our office. So I decided to take a quick look into it. After a quick tally heres what I found....

Windows Mobile. Outlook on the move

When you are in business these days, deciding on the best electronic device to have in your pocket is not easy. Do you go for a Blackberry, or perhaps you upgrade your phone, or perhaps there is a better option? Well maybe there is. For 18 months now I've been using an I-MATE K-JAM ( I've now got my eye on this one, which looks even better http://www.htc.com/product/03-products-2.htm) phone. This little device pretty much gives me the entire contents of my Microsoft Outlook seamlessly synchronised with my office, meaning I get my e-mail pushed, my office calendar, tasks and all...

How you can take what Avis is doing and apply it to your blog

I found an interesting article on e-consultancy where they interview Xavier Vallee - the head of marketing for Avis UK. In the interview he discusses how Avis are using business blogging to their advantage. I was interested to find out more because before I read the article I could not see how Avis would benefit from a blog. The customers want to rent a car and that is it. Why would Avis want to blog? What advantage would this give them? What would they blog about? And most importantly, is it really worth all the money? Ask yourself the same...

New Connexion Identity is launched

On the 1st of June Connexion went live with its new corporate identity. Developing our new identity hasn't simply been a case of designing a new logo and a new graphical look for our business; it's been so much more than that. We have tried to fully understand our business and its strengths, and to fashion a brand that effectively communicates what we do and the way we do it. If there is one thing that we have learnt above all else over the last 13 years, it is the need for us to Think Beyond Technology. In other words,...

How can your business benefit from technology

These days pretty much every small businesses has at least one computer with internet access, e-mail and a suite of expensive Microsoft software loaded on it, but how much good is this actually doing for business? The information at your fingertips, and the speed with which you can communicate with customers and suppliers is indeed truly awesome in comparison with 5 years ago, however is it giving your business an edge on your competition? The answer is probably no. The reality is that this technology is now the norm, you will certainly miss it if its taken away, and you...

The tell tale signs of a virus email

Despite the daily advance software companies are making in the fight against viruses and spyware, there is still no system (yet!) that is perfect and the odd virus can slip through into your inbox. Generally the latest viruses to hit the net are the hardest to detect leaving you vulnerable and no matter how often your virus scan is updated there is always going to be a virus that can get through. However, spotting a virus is quite a straight forward task as most emails share the same characteristics. Take note of these following important points to look out for:Read...
