Domain name overhaul could change the internet forever

ICANN (The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) has given the go ahead to relax the rules on "top-level" domains.

In short this means that at the moment we have .com, .co.uk, .org and other domains but in the future domains will be able to end in .anythingyoulike. For example it will now be possible to have domains ending in .hotel or .connexion.

The bad news is that you can't just go out and buy one of these top level domains. You will need to show a "business plan and technical capacity" plus it will cost a few million to setup.

What this means to you and I is that although we may not have the ability to set a new top level domain up, there could be some pretty interesting results popping up in the future. Keep an eye out for possibilities that you could take advantage of. We may also see a rush to register more popular domain extensions such as .shop or .xxx

The process of introducing the new system will start in 2009, with the first websites possibly coming online in the final quarter of the year.

The BBC has a good video explanation if you would like a more in depth look.
