SPAM - Prevent yourself from getting it.

SPAM email is a real nuisance, not only do you pay to download it (through your internet connection), it clogs up your computer, makes it difficult to find emails, wastes your time from having to clear it up and contains potentially malicious attachments. The more you can do to prevent your email address from being spammed the better.

In a recent security report, Microsoft estimated that 97% of all emails sent over the net are unwanted. The e-mails are dominated by spam adverts for drugs, and general product pitches and often have malicious attachments.

In order to prevent yourself from getting SPAM it is important to understand how the spammers work. Potentially, you could be receiving endless amounts of SPAM emails because of something you have done. The following guide will help you to prevent getting unwanted emails in the first place, as they say prevention is better than cure. Next we will explain how to stop SPAM that you are already getting.

  1. Use your email address with caution
Giving out your email address to unknown websites is the number one cause for receiving spam. In these cases I have setup an email address solely for this use (Use a free email provider such as Gmail, Yahoo or Hotmail). This way you can let these accounts attract spam rather than your every day email address.

  2. Take your email address off your website
If you have your own website don't put your e-mail address in a 'mailto' tag which can be detected by spambots. Either replace your email with an image or a contact form which means your email address is hidden.

  3. Turn off email previews
Turn off the 'preview' feature of your email program which will hide images unless you specifically ask for them to be shown. Spammers have a clever way of 'testing' to see if your email address is active by using emails with images. Better still, if the email looks like a spam message, delete it straight away without opening at all.

  4. Don't forward chain letters
Think twice before forwarding chain-letters or petitions. Mass-mailings like this still constitute spam and the lists of addresses on them are later used by spammers.

  5. Never buy anything from a spam email
It goes without saying that spam email only works if people buy from them so don't encourage them! It will also mark you as a target for these emails and you can expect even more once they know you are willing to buy.

  6. Finally, don't reply, ever!

Follow these guidelines and you can help to avoid getting spam to your email in the first place.
